April is National Financial Literacy Month, which is a reminder that when it comes to your money, knowledge is power. It doesn’t matter what your financial situation is or what stage of life you are in, understanding how money works and the best strategy for you can benefit your bottom line and give you peace of mind.
One of the best ways to increase your financial knowledge is by working with a financial coach like those in the Capital Good Fund Financial Coaching Plus program.
Before learning about Capital Good Fund and enrolling in the Coaching Plus program, money was a struggle for Michelle Mitchell, 60, of Houston Texas. If an unexpected financial expense came up, she resorted to using credit cards or turning to payday lenders with high interest rates that forced her to pay up to three times what she borrowed to resolve the loan. Also, she admits she had gotten into the bad habit many people have of eating out too often, which adds up.
All that changed when she started working with Capital Good Fund financial coach Michelle Paulino. “To have somebody hold me accountable and direct me to a better way of doing things has been remarkable,” she said. “She doesn’t make me feel bad about any poor decisions I made and the situation I am in.”
Together the two have created a budget so Mitchell knows where her money is going and set concrete goals for her such as having a third of her pre-existing debt paid off and a thousand dollars in an emergency fund by the end of June. She has cut some of her credit cards, so she won’t use them while she pays off what she owes before closing the account and packs a bag lunch when she goes to the office.
“Michelle has really helped me to not have such a weight or burden of just not knowing what my future looks like,” Mitchell added. “I see financial coaching as an investment not only in myself, but in my family because it’s given me the tools, so they won’t have to go through a lot of the financial challenges that I’ve gone through.”
