CGF Hits Exciting Milestone As We Issue Our 10th Loan!

Wednesday, December 02, 2009

On November 15th we made our 10th loan to a local carpet installer who will use the $3,000 to buy tools and supplies in bulk so that he can spend more time earning profit from jobs and less time going back and forth to supply stores. We made our first loan in March and we have already lent out $22,675 to 9 amazing people since then!  As we look back on all that we have accomplished in our first year of operation, we are proud to have enabled 2 legal permanent residents to become United States citizens; to have trained 12 people through our 5-class business training workshop; and to have supported 6 entrepreneurs to start, grow and green their businesses.  We continue to receive numerous inquiries for our loans, and we are confident that in the next 12 months we will reach even more people more effectively than ever!

Thank you to everyone who has helped us to get to this point.

CGF To Provide First FREE Business Training Workshop On October 31st

Sunday, October 18, 2009

After several months of hard work, CGF is ready to offer its first free business training workshop on October 31st from 3-5 PM.  The workshop, taught over 5 consecutive weekends, will be held at the office of English for Action, 122 Manton Ave., Room 710 in Olneyville, Providence, Rhode Island.  Designed for individuals interested in a loan from CGF but who are not yet ready to apply, the workshop teaches basic business skills, such as saving, profit, marketing and cost-benefit analysis, and follows up with activities such as market analyses and profit and loss statements that enable participants to see if their business idea can be profitable.  What makes the workshop truly unique, however, is the way in which it teaches these business basics within the context of green business products, services and practices; for example, in the lesson on cost-benefit analysis, participants learn why it is better to pay more up front for an energy-efficient appliance because, over time, it will be far cheaper to operate than the less-efficient appliance that has a lower up-front cost.

7 excited entrepreneurs have already signed up for the workshop (which will be taught in Spanish) and we are eager to report back on the success of the first class!

For more information and to sign up call us at 866-584-3651.

CGF’s Innovative Green Business Curriculum Featured in Brown Daily Herald

CGF has been hard at work the past month adapting the Barefoot MBA program—an “open-source” basic business training curriculum designed for international microlenders—for our clients right here in Providence, Rhode Island.  In addition to making the curriculum more relevant to the needs of our clients, CGF has also incorporated basis business concepts, such as the importance of paying the cost-premium for more efficient products that will pay for themselves over time, and made these concepts an integral part of the curriculum.  The Brown Daily Herald recently wrote a story about CGF’s adaptation of the Barefoot MBA program—in part because the Barefoot program was developed by a Brown alumna, and because CGF is staffed and run by Brown students and alums.  The article, titled “Business School takes its Shoes Off,” can be found here.
